Using Mergent Online to find Company Information

1. Get to Mergent Online from the library website http://www.malone.edu/library

• Select OhioLINK Resources – then by name from left-hand column
• If you are at home the proxy server will automatically know that and ask you for your name and barcode to confirm that you are a Malone student.

2. In the identifier box on the left select Ticker and type PNRA into the box.

Oracle will show up in the search screen. Click on this to retrieve the file for PNRA.

3. The default screen provides a basic overview of financial and company information with clickable tabs across the top of the screen.

4. For Financial Statements select Company Financials from the top of the page.

Set the type of financial report, date range, currency etc. using the pull down menus at the top of the page.

5. To open the report as an excel spreadsheet click on the text Download to MS Excel to the right of the Excel symbol. You may need to adjust the column width by clicking on the bars at the top of each column dividing the cells (such as A | B)

Repeat this process for each financial report you need.

6. For information on short-term borrowings (credit line amount and usage) and reports such as 10Ks select the EDGAR tab.

• Ticker = PNRA

• Select the appropriate date range or exact date you want

• Select the type of filing such as 10K

• Search

Note that 10Ks normally occur within the last 12 months. If you set a range less than that you may get 0 results.

7. The results can be viewed in a variety of formats: html, word, .pdf, table of contents or using the pull-down menu to the right you can view specific parts of the document if you do not want to download the whole thing. These are features that finance.yahoo.com does not offer. Yahoo also doesn’t 15 years worth of data.

Another unique option Mergent offers on this screen is a lookup by the CIK (Central Key Index) Use the SEC CIK Database tab for this option.

8. Create a Comparison Report of Ratios for PNRA to its competitors:

• Select the Competitors Tab
• Choose add all to Company Analysis List (click on text)
• At top of page click on expand next to Company Analysis List
• Click on the box (to check) each company you want included in the comparison report
• Create Comparison Report
• Select Ratios from the category pull-down menu
• Select the appropriate sub category from the pull-down menu next to it
• Click add report item box – you will then see the information show up in the report criteria box
• For the date range select one date or for multiple dates hold down the shift key while highlighting the dates you want with the mouse
• Create Report

A pop-up will display the report with options to download or print in the right-hand corner

The Multi- Company Report option creates a customized report according to data items you determine for each company selected. These are displayed one after another and not in chart format as a comparison.

Create Reports Tab

• Custom Reports - for the company you are viewing,
• Pre-defined reports (full, abridged, company overview, and several financial reports) – a batch report option is available to include other companies saved in the company analysis list.
• Comparison Reports - for the company compared to the industry or compared to the custom group from your company analysis list.

Research Tab

Provides access to Institutional Ownership Summary and list of Institutional Holders

Industry Profile Tab

Provides information about country profiles, current environment, industry profile, key points, key references, market trends and outlook, scope of the report, sales contacts and comparative data.
